Time To Imagine The Future

I still remember watching this video for the first time, a few weeks back. I recall the elation that leapt out of my notebook screen and swept over me. I immediately started posting and sharing and was amazed by the fervour and immediacy of the feedback. That same night I contacted Peter Economides via twitter and facebook, to congratulate him and let him know the impact his speech had had on me and those around me. And how I'd gladly lend my support to the spreading of this idea.

You see, because of my father's work, I grew up at the heart of the then small enclosure that was Greek advertisement, in the 70s.

A series of photographs of my then 9-year-old self, directed by my father and shot by Alexis Sofianopoulos resulted in an EOT poster, while another became the basis of an engraving that was to become a postage stamp

So a great deal of what Peter was touching upon struck a very familiar chord with me. But much more than that, it moved and inspired me. And I have good cause to believe these emotions are shared by a great number of people in this country and beyond.

A lot of comments were coming in,  asking that it be subtitled in Greek, so I asked Peter about it. A Greek friend of mine who is deaf, was asking the same thing. Peter said he was working towards that, but was somewhat swamped. So I offered to transcribe and translate his presentation for him.

I spent the entire next day on the project, so you can imagine how many times I watched and listened!

That was a few weeks ago.

Today, Peter uploaded the subtitled video and I watched it again.

And guess what? It got me by the gut, exactly as it had done the first time around!

I don't know much about brands or branding or -far less- branding strategies. But I do know a good song when I hear it. And this one here, is a classic. And a "keeper".

Please watch and, if you feel the same way about it as I and so many others by now do, help spread the word!

Enjoy!

PS: Thank you, Κύριε Οικονομίδη!

Maison Et Décoration

WAIT, THERE'S MORE!!

Unikko

Ο Κωστής ζωγράφισε πάλι, in more ways than one!

Novender

Και για σένα που πετάχτηκες αμέσως να με πεις υπερβολική ("are you talking to moi??")

Equinox

September 21st.

We (Georgia and I) left Athens on August 21st, and are due to return on October 21st.
This is the half-way mark.

Appropriately enough, it is also the Equinox. This is the day that in my mind heralds the end of Summer and ushers in the dreaded Winter. As of tomorrow, each day will be shorter than the one before and true to my nature, I will wane right along with the daylight. What can I say? I have suspected for a long time now that I may be part-bear.

I find myself torn between the longing to return to my own turf, my family and friends, Bafos and Karamouzakis (my loving feline concubines), my partners in music, my work, my own hours and my own bed (in my new and practically yet unlived-in home) and the entirely surprising desire to stay.

Stay? Where? Surely, not here here.
What have I seen of this wondrous strange land that would create such a pull?
Nothing. Three blocks worth of street at Green Park. The route to and from Gautam Nagar. Part of a gigantic western-type shopping mall that goes by the improbable sobriquet of "Select CityWalk".

And yet!

I think that what I am really finding so enchanting is that, unbelievably (considering the millennia of History that have unfolded on this soil), the overwhelming sensation that reverberates in every aspect of this place, is one of promise. Of things to come. Of things unborn. Of potential.

I don't consider myself to be a mindless creature. Not unintelligent, still, I primarily  perceive the world at large with my gut. Invariably I will gather as much data about a given topic as I can. But ultimately, I will fly by the seat of my pants. Play it by ear.
Against all reasoning, more than about the Past, more than about the Present, this feels like it's about the Future.

But then again, had I not been told that this is the land of Paradox?
Had I not read the textbook tales of slums next to unfathomable wealth? Of illiteracy and scientific cutting edge avant-garde? Of filthy cities and virgin nature? Of gaudiness and breathtaking artistic expression?

Still, what I sense goes farther, much much farther than any of these (even though they seem  to hold perfectly true).

For instance: Supposedly, this is meant to be the epitome of, as James Brown put it in his inimitable manner, A Man's Man's Man's World.

And yet, the energy here is unmistakeably female. In the sense that it is nurturing. It feels like a womb.It feels like a fluvial delta or basin, rich with sediment. I mean, just take a look at the geographical map, for crying out loud! It even looks like a womb! Interestingly enough, the Greek word for pelvis (wherein the womb) and basin, is one and the same: λεκάνη [lekáni].

One feels safe here. Protected. Not by virtue of might, but by virtue, alone.
While sitting with a slumbering child's cheek resting on your lap, you might make the assumption that you are its guardian. But if you think about it, you will realize that the assumption is false. It is you who are kept safe by the child's presence, alone. This is how I feel here in India.

I realize I must sound like I'm "not all there" but I know what I am sensing and anyone who knows me, will tell you I'm not prone to flighty metaphysics.

This sentiment is equally manifest in the people I have encountered here. The same nurturing smile. The authentic kind: their smiles reside in their eyes, not their mouths. Again, I had been told of the Indian people's politeness. "Politeness" is a notion that never sat comfortably with me. It leaves me with an after-taste of pretence (as indeed does my other pet peeve: "nice"). I have not found the Indian people to be in the least bit "polite". Or "nice". I have found them to be gentle, especially when verbal communication is difficult. Supposedly famous for their lack of display, emotion is definitely palpable, barely contained in skin. Gentle and caring. Attentive and unassuming. And delightfully, disarmingly, liberatingly funny.

In the meantime, the atmosphere permeating the various communication channels with my home town is becoming increasingly alarming. Angst. Fear. Unrest. Some have gone as far as saying "you will not be returning to the same country you left behind". It's not meant as a good thing.

My particular situation seems precarious to say the least. The "season" is almost upon us, yet I haven't the faintest clue as to where, how and under what circumstances I will (will I?) be engaging in my profession.

Seems to me, that the best thing to do is adopt the local attitude to all things temporal, that is to ignore them.

After all, this is the half way mark.

So I'll leave it at that, for now.

Before I surrender to this Equinox though, I will venture two predictions:

There will be tears at both ends of our journey back to Athens.

I will be returning to this blessed land.

Home from Home

The notion of home seems to be a recurring one, throughout my life, but in the past few weeks in particular.

Strange, how it has been manifesting itself of late, in so many different forms. Now it returns, now that I find myself so far from "home", on the Asian continent for the first time in my life, under very specific circumstances.

I'll be candid and I'll say that visiting India never was a top priority for me, even though -as anyone who knows me at all will confirm- I thrive on travelling. I think that what turned me off (and this has absolutely no foundation in any pragmatic sense, as I know next to nothing of this amazing land) most, was the flavour left me of Europeans and Americans who went on the ashram trip. Let there be no room for misunderstanding here: it's neither the country nor its places of spiritual quest that repelled me. It is the generic European who sought them out. India just suffered by association. As it turns out, as the most tragic kind of victim there is: the Innocent.

Did I not relish Indian food when I was living in London as a student? Have I not marvelled at the beautiful fabrics? The amazing architecture? Have I not been the grateful recipient of ayurvedic massage since last October (when nothing could be farther removed from my mind than the prospect of "A Passage To India")?

I have been here almost a week. "Here" is New Delhi. Actually, that is also false. "Here" is room 303 of the clinic that will be my "home" for the next 7 weeks, in New Delhi. I still know next to nothing about this place, this city, let alone this land, which for all practical purposes is an entire continent in itself. That is to say, that I have no rational knowledge.

But what of the knowledge that comes of the gut & heart?

What struck me almost immediately is how -considering it took me two flights and 8 hours to get here- I never got the feeling of being "elsewhere". Sure, the air is hotter and moister. The traffic is mad. The vehicles are exotic. The lemons are dwarfish. The people have darker skin (not really a feat -- few are paler than I). And yet, no sign of the "culture shock" friends had been warning me about.

Which brings me back to the notion that People are Home.

I don't yet have specifics, but I do have an "aroma", an impression if you will. And this is, the aroma of gentleness, of kindness, of intelligence.

There's something about the eyes, the depth of their gaze. It speaks of understanding. Something about the tone of the voices. They speak of awareness and caring. Something about the readiness of laughter. Even the most precious kind: the one directed at one's self. Something about the fluidity of movement. It speaks of ease and generosity.

I am reminded of a intimate anecdote: My father was present in the delivery room during my birth. When first he saw me he was overwhelmed, as only a man becoming a father for the first time, and to a daughter to boot, can be. He turned to my mother and said: "This is no child we have here... This is 'mukhti'!"
The word means nothing in Greek. It was an expletive of an onomatopoeic nature, meant to convey my looks (or, perhaps more precisely, the emotion my looks brought forth in him). In any case, the word stuck with me and became my nickname, used only by members of my immediate family (nowadays only by my father and my brother).
I later found out it is a noun of the Hindi language that -according to context- translates as:
liberation, release, emancipation, deliverance, rescue, immunity, saving, absolution, vacation, immunization.

I will no doubt be returning to these thoughts in the near future. For the time being I'll just enjoy basking in the feeling of being "at home" :)

Growing Pains

Growing Pains (yes, still!)
Athens, April, 2010

When I was a very young girl, working with dogged determination and militaristic self-dicipline towards becoming a ballerina, with my head and heart filled with dreams of tutus and pointes and bright lights and Tchaikovsky and my leotard soaked through and through and my hands sticky with resin powder, a very well-respected teacher and examiner came to Athens from RAD HQ in London, for a series of seminars that would culminate in a public performance: Danielle Taylor.

From the second day of classes onwards, I remember returning to my mother's arms exhausted and in tears. Miss Taylor had honed her attentions on me and bore down on me with all the charm of a drill sergeant. Why? Why me? What had I done wrong? Why did she hate me so??? One day I was in the show with a solo (no less), the next told to pack my tights and go. This went on for a week, and I was on the brink of a breakdown. I was seething. I was angry and bruised, in more ways than one. The self-pity was delectable. After all... I *was* one of my teacher's star students. I had passed all my exams to date with no less than "Highly Commended", but more often with "Honours". What did the Wicked Witch Of The West want with me???

I just didn't get it.

Furthermore, I couldn't believe that my adoring mother let this gross injustice unfold without so much as a protest. Finally, two days prior to the performance (my place in it was -yet again- uncertain), I'd had enough. I returned home in an absolutely vitriolic mood, declared that first thing next day I was going to quit the bloody show all together and unleashed all of my bitterness on the only person in the Universe who would carry on loving me, no matter what: my mother.

After my wrath was spent and I was sobbing in her embrace she very VERY gently said to me:

"Let me ask you something. Miss Taylor flew here all the way from London and has more than 200 girls in her tutelage. She doesn't know you, and once she is gone, the two of you will probably never meet again. But she has devoted so much of her attention and energy to you. Why do you think that is?"

What was she driving at? Where was the line connectiong the dots? I was baffled.

"Teachers like Miss Taylor only give their time to those that show the most promise. She works you so hard because she believes you are worth it. Really, it is a great honour. Now... sleep on it and tomorrow you can decide whether you still want to quit the show. Assuming Miss Taylor decides to keep you in it, that is."

All this happened a good 30 years ago.

It has become abundantly clear that in the more than 16 years of performing to date, I went pretty much unquestioned. I was allowed to rely on my abilities, such as they were, unchallenged and unquestionned. Never pushed to evolve, never encouraged to better myself, never given the time and effort. After all, the "job" got done, didn't it? How sordid. Because, you see, this is not a "job". It goes to the very core of who I am.

Assuming that at age 12 I didn't know any better, now aged 42, I would certainly hope that I *do*.

Recently I have found myself in a situation that has recalled these long-faded memories. The circumstances are other, the relationship different. No yelling, no tantrums. Well, not so far (LOL)

... and yet!

My dismay lasted all of 2 minutes. Thanks to the combined efforts of Miss Taylor and my very wise mom back then, that's how long it took me to realize what I'm being offered now: An invaluable opportunity to concentrate on what's really important. To learn. To dare to strive to be all that I can be. To go beyond what comes easy, to unlearn the bad habits I picked up along the way in order to deal with the less than encouraging status quo of my chosen craft, through which I had forged a path in near-utter solitude.

Some would say that an old dog doesn't learn new tricks. To them I have only this to say: I am not a dog, I'm not old and I'm not interested in learning tricks. Furthermore, and at the risk of being labeled a conceited cow: I'm not a peddlar, I'm an artist. I have shied from this long enough, time to Face The Music And Dance.

To the person who gave me this blessed wake-up call, and you know who you are, I can only say this: thank you. For deeming me worthy, for your precious time and effort, for caring, for reminding me what it's all about and for pulling the train, side by side. It is nothing less than a perfect gift, an honour to which I am but happy to gratefully respond by submitting my obligation and promise to do my level best.

To all concerned: Flock to those who make things tough on you. Those who make it easy do so by indifference.

And now, if I might be excused, I must get back to my work. What joy!!

PS: I did perform in that show. Miss Taylor hugged me after, with tears in her eyes. I never became a dancer. I did become an actress and a singer. One day soon, I'll be a musician. I suspect mom is smiling.
